    k1600 front ball joint
    « on: 2016-09-15 10:22:13 »
hi I am trying to put together a list of bikes that have had to have ball joints replaced
at a cost of about £600.00 if not in warranty
I know from some reports it after 12k and some low mileage
I had one done at 18k and the last one this year 5k (yes 5)and its shot not just slight
this is a key suspension component and as a engineer I don't think its up to the job its doing on this bike
the part number has not changed so who wants to keep paying its time mw did some thing about this
its spoiling the other wise a good bike I have had 4
pls let me know when and mileage and bike i.e. gt gtl or exclusive
    Steve

I have 42,000 us Miles on my 2012, no issues with ball joints.  I only hand wash mine.  Power washing at a car wash can not be good for ball joints and wheel bearings.  Also the rear differential has an air breather vent so power washing might not be good as well

9000 miles ball joints changed, tech said that there was still play with the new ones so ordered another set and fitted these, said he was happy with the second set. Have been out one run since I got it back and the klunk img/knocking noise is just the same as it was when I reported the problem.

Hand washed, no chemicals nor pressure washers used.

You have a point steve.  The roads in my area are 90% paved and flat/smooth.  I can now understand how rough roads can do a beating on this ball joint especially if the bike is loaded up with additional mass...body, luggage and more.  My wife would probally blow out the ball joint just by sitting on the passenger seat...lol

let me know how you get on
if you think about it you can put 5k on a bike in 4weeks
                    4wheels not a problem
                    2wheels I get concerned
I think this need to be addressed before some thing or some one gets hurt

Something came up which has ment I could not get over to the dealer.

As far as I am aware both ball joints were replaced.

BMW tech as far as I am aware said to replace the ball joints and to raise a puma.

that seams to the way with bmw just keep putting on parts but not fixing the fault
                          a updated parts is needed
had a call to day about my bike its going in this week for new forks and joints
and later on this year a new engine
if it wasn't for a Honda being so boring I would go back to Honda
I had had 4 k1600 and 2 new engines' etc. etc.
on my old pans 60k no problems
its time bmw took some time out
I have spent more time on lone bikes ?????? mined you I have tested them all
