      Welcome to the forum.
I've heard of a few others who have gotten a new gearbox but it's not a common thing.
Not sure what the differences are between '12 gear boxes and newer ones; nor what the 'extra bits' are to bring it up to date.

          What drive train lash?
Was that the reason to replace the gear box in the first place?

bikes made in 2011 and 2012 have a clunk/slack in the drive train this was fixed in the 2013 models onwards they put in extra bits in to fix it

Big Welcome from a fen in south Lincolnshire.

My 14 model year transmission is poor when compared to my 1400GTR but I take it that it's "Typical of Type"

Now if we are comparing day long comfort there is only 1 winner 😃

My bike was made in Feb 2011. Never noticed any severe slack in the drive train (there always is a little slack).
But I know there has been a slight change since the '13 model.
Anyway: most important is that you get a new gearbox and you can enjoy riding again.

Recently noticed backlash from drive train on my 2013 gtl with 16000 miles with bike up on the centre stand and in all gears the rear wheel can be rotated 1 to 2 inch before the slack in the drive is taken up !! Does anyone know if this is within BMW's acceptable tolerances ???

I was concerned about that as well on my 2015 so I checked a brand new one in a local dealership and it was exactly the same.
