    Extra storage...
    « on: 2013-04-14 16:49:58 »

I wanted to have some extra secure storage (no bungies to the seat) so I added a trailer hitch from DMC Sidecars and a Pakit Rak. It holds 25lbs in this configuration.

Clever solution I haven't seen before.
Doesn't it make the bike unstable when it's full by having additional weight behind the rear wheel and therefore 'lifting' the front wheel?
Do you also have a trailer?

I took a trip with it this weekend. Of the 925-odd miles, it was loaded and on the bike for about 585 of them. I had the bike up to 95mph (150+ kph) and 200 miles were on mountain roads. For the most part, I didn't notice a change in handling, with the exception of some possible extra wiggle from gusting winds.

I do not have a trailer at the present time. I'm not sure if that will change or not. Aside from the cost of the trailer hitch, I thought that if the $475 Pakit Rak solved my problem, that was better than spending $2,800+ on a trailer (which is still an option).

I'd be more worried about the extra weight being put through the sub frame.

Or has this been calculated into the design ?

I don't know about that. The tube portion of the tow bar attaches to the exhaust mounts and the hanger bars drop from right next to the forward saddlebag cleat. My guess is that a trailer will put up to 40lbs of load on the hitch tongue, so 25lbs probably isn't an issue.
