Engine oil - Opinions?
    « on: 2013-05-24 02:12:14 »
I know this is a slippery slope, no pun intended, but is anyone else actually changing their own oils and with what?

I have 0% faith in my local dealer after a couple of run ins. Motorrad are happy for me to service it myself if I use genuine parts and follow the schedule. My owners manual recommends Castrol oils, the local dealer uses Motul. In the past I used Mobil 1 synthetic. Anyone have any brand suggestions?

I found the recommended oil in a shop I don't frequent. Never even seen Castrol racing 1 before.

Now to drop the diff oil. No idea what weight it's supposed to be.

I use Castrol Power 1 Racing SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2 as recommended in the manual. My dealer uses it when servicing and I use it when I (occasionally) have to add a bit.

If you are in the US there is an auto parts chain called O'reillys Auto Parts. They stock 10-40 Castrol RS, meets spec in book. They also stock Castrol Syntrax gear oil that meets the spec in book. Pricing is also very good, enough of a savings to pay for BMW oil filter.

I stick with the factory recommended Castrol Power 1 Racing SAE 5W-40. Will have a bottle with me for my upcoming trip. In case she gets thirsty in the Alps  ;)

If you're doing under 3k you should be OK.

Castrol RS is motorcycle specific. RS is the same as Racing 1 US product.

The Dealer uses Castrol in their servicing so that is what it runs until the Warranty expires, after that I'll drop Royal Purple in.

I can only find the Castrol Power Racing 4T in 10w-40 with the API SL Jaso T903, Jaso MA-2 spec. this spec does not match BMW'S for Lubrication, hence the SG/SH additional on the BMW 5w-40 label. I have just bought a GTL and want to start out with the right lubricants. I was looking at Amsoil as it meets and exceeds the spec for the BMW oil and Gear lubes. Does anyone have a thought on this?

Hi,I have approached BMW to see if they approve another oil, perhaps a more viscous one. They told me that the only oil they recommend for my K1600GT is the Castrol 5/40.Being unhappy with the reply,I contacted Putoline,as they have always been recommended for every other bmw I have owned. They said they have a suitable oil for my bike, and added that this shouldn,t cause warranty issues.I then approached my dealer who agreed that Putolines oil should be OK.However,I,m currently waiting for the gearbox to be sorted/replaced by my dealer. They,ve had my bike for 12 days, and are now waiting to hear from BMW,as to the next step they can take.I am very frustrated with BMW at present, and will report the outcome on this forum in due course.

What is your concern about using the oil the manufacturer recommends? One assumes they know best or at least wouldn't recommend an unsuitable oil.

As I understand it, the spec of the oil by a manufacturer is the minimum requirement. So using API SL, is using a higher spec oil than the recommended API SG/SH. Higher the letter, the higher spec the oil.

The SG/Sh spec's are actually now obsolete.

Thank you for this chart! This explains the dust on the oil at the dealership. So I can use the Castrol Power RS Racing 4T but does it have to be the 5W-40 or can I run the 10W-40? I live in Texas and you can ride year here without it getting too cold but is the 10W going to affect the engine somehow?

Because your in the USA, I wouldn't like to say which weight of oil to use.

Your hand book should have it though.
