    Centre stand spring problem
    « on: 2014-01-19 20:18:54 »
A few weeks ago I discovered that the rear most of the two springs on the centre stand had come off the spigot at the bottom leaving it hanging. This happened a few times before I then turned the spring around to match the other and a very slight adjustment to the spigot in the hope that the spring would stop coming off. This worked.......... for about three weeks. Riding to work today I became aware of a clanking sound and when I inspected it I found that the spring had gone completely and the centre stand was bashing on the frame instead of being held firm by the springs. The bikes in for its service soon so it will be sorted then, hopefully under warranty but has anyone else had a similar problem?

Never had this problem and never even heard of it.
      Have both springs gone?
For the time being I would secure  the centre stand with a tie wrap and use the side  stand.

That's a new one.  Will probably lead to a nation wide recall over the pond.

It was just the rear most spring that kept coming off and its that one that has gone this time.  Tie wrap till service!

Springs have a very complicated manufacturing process.  It is possible the original metal had  flaw or the heat treat process.  At any rate BMW should replace it for free as this spring should last the lifetime of the bike.  You can go to the dealer or most large hardware stores and garage door companies carry heavy springs but you may need to heat and bend the end to match the original.
