    Excessive oil use ??
    « on: 2012-09-18 18:22:37 »
I have a friend who has already done 54.000 km (34000 miles) on his 1600GT since April last year.
He experience oil use, about 1-1½ liter every 6000km.
Has anyone noticed the same problem?
    Be careful out there

Some use oil, others don't. Mine does.  :-\
In certain cases the oil consumption improves after a while (10k or 20k km) but not always.
My BMW technician told me that up to 700ml/1000km is within the tolerance values for BMW. As long as it doesn't worsen I won't bother too much. Just will make sure I have oil with me at all times.

It was a bit of a change for me as my K1200S did no use oil at all.

        Two things.

Make sure you check the oil as per the recommendations - warm until the fans come on and leave to settle once switched off as the oil for checking sits in a secondary sump.  You will get a low reading if you don't and risk over-filling.

Secondly, the reason for oil consumption is due to the perfect production techniques and expensive thin oils used.
If mineral oils were used for the first two services they would leave more deposits and create better seals internally.

Live with oil consumption, or risk mineral oils.  I had heavy oil consumption initially (about 2k after service) but it has now settled (8.4k now)

Wow! Took a ride yesterday and the check oil light came on. The dipstick was dry! I topped off with 750 ml., but this is after only 800 total miles.  Going to have to keep an eye on this.

Between the two service 30K-40K my K16GT/11 have eat'd 1 liter - maybe 1.25 since I do not topped up before the service.

At first 600 mile service point changed oil to BMW full synthetic. Next oil change at 6,000 miles changed to Amsoil 10W-40 MC synthetic. Now at 9,000 miles and have never had to top off the oil since new. Tranny shifts are still as smooth as a brand new oil change. Will continue to use Amsoil at next 12,000 mile service point oil change.  :)

Although this is an old topic and I haven't posted for a while, I thought to give an update as it's really a significant one. After my 20k km maintenance, things started to settle. During the next 10k I consumed about 1.5 l oil and now 3k after my 30k big maintenance no noticeable oil consumption. This seems to confirm what I read on other fora. The bike is running like a Swiss clock (knock on wood). Just returned from a European meeting I organised in my neck of the woods, the Mazurian lakes. Unfortunately no international trips for me this year due to work/time constraints.

I just got the biggest surprise today on the way to work.  My 2012 has 20,000 US Miles on her.  Mostly highway miles.  It has never used any oil from 0 miles to 18,000 us miles.  No all of a sudden the oil light comes on this morning!  1 full US Quart low!  What is up with that?  I am very concerned.  The BMW dealer said the spce was 1 US Quart every 2000 US Miles.  Any ideas why she never used oil the past two years and now suddenly uses 1 full us quart?   I only use full synthetic 5-40 and change the oil/filter every 5,000 US Miles like clock work.
